Motorcycle Repair Section - Dirt Bikes and ATVs |
|
Dirt bike and ATV fenders are usually made of low density polyethylene (PE). Polyethylene is known as an "olefinic" plastic, which literally means "oily" plastic. Polypropylene (PP) is another type of plastic in this family that is sometimes used on dirt bikes and ATVs. You can recognize these types of plastic by their slightly greasy feel. They usually have a slightly translucent appearance as well. The fact that polyethylene is "oily" makes it easy to wash off the mud after you're done riding, but it makes it hard for any adhesive or paint to stick to it. In fact, there is NO WAY to use any type of glue to repair polyethylene! The only way to properly repair PE is to weld it. Click on the icon at the right for more technical details about how to repair PE. Urethane Supply Company offers two welders for repairing polyethylene. The most popular is our ATV Fender Welder. It has a 40 watt heating element and comes with PE welding rod and sells for only $49.95. It's best suited for the motorcycle rider who does the occasional repair on his own bike. Also available is our 5600HT Mini-Weld Model 6 Airless Plastic Welder. This is our professional unit used in body shops all over the world. It has a 100 watt heating element, two welding tips, eight types of welding rod (including PE), stainless steel reinforcing mesh, and a training video tape. It sells for $249.95, which sounds like a lot, but you can usually make your money back after doing only one or two repairs. |
